On our journey together, I hope to teach you some great things that will help in your day to day life.
I am an expert in buying a car, at the ripe age of 28, I have owned and titled over 150 cars myself, and owned another 50 or so on top of that. Granted, the average person reading this may not be going on craigslist 8 states away to find the deal, but I am sure you are shopping auto trader and cargurus for the car you want, at the price you want.
A common misconception is, if you don't see it, that means it isn't there. What I mean by this is - say you're shopping for a 2020+ Chevrolet Silverado - (this would never happen) but say you look 50 miles from your house and see none for sale - 60% of people give up the search right there, the other 40% will look further out. Your mistake is not calling your local dealer.
This happens all the time - more than you may think in fact, where in this instance your local Chevy store is taking in the perfect truck on trade, but it hasn't hit the site yet. A dealer will near always give a better deal A. The faster you buy the car (prior to it hitting the site or fresh on the site) B. The more local you are to the given dealer. Granted, there are some horrible dealers out there who don't care about you or your family or what you want or where you're from. But a majority of dealers DO care, you can leverage this information to get into a better position & in turn work your relationship with that dealer in the future for service, additional purchases, etc.
When you shop outside of your area, it puts the dealer in control of the situation, allowing them to know "they drove 80-100 miles for this truck, clearly it is what they want, stick to your guns" the sales manager will load the sales persons lips or come out and tell you themself that "it is what it is, our best price, our best rate, this is what your trade it worth etc"
Life is all about relationships, this translates to the dealership. You should never go in demanding what you want, in turn, telling them where you want to be and why. Always work within reason, and you will 90% of the time be accomodated as best as possible by the selling LOCAL dealer!
As a side note - even if they don't have what you want, with some patience, all dealers have the access to get you what you want within reason. There isn't a "used car factory" BUT there are multiple dealer channels that they can work through to find you what you are looking for! Don't give up, your local dealer wants you to stay local, and will do everything they can to make sure you do!
